Our History

The White Potato Lake Sportsmen’s Club was established in 1989 and achieved 501© (3) nonprofit status in September 1991.  The Sportsmen’s Club classification and focus activity codes are Code 286: Hunting or fishing club and Code 379: Other conservation, environmental or beautification activities.

The Club’s major activities include supporting the fishery of the lake through fish planting programs and the general health of the lake. In addition, the Sportsmen’s Club support conservation efforts, sportsmanship ethics and special programs for the youth, handicapped, and elderly of the club.  It also supports education with the granting of scholarships for those college students who will be or are majoring in the Conservation and Natural Resources fields along with financial support of our local fire department, rescue squad and other charitable causes.

White Potato Lake is a 1023-acre lake, located in Pound Wisconsin.  The lake has 6 public boat landings.  The approximate lake depth is 11 – 12 feet.  Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye.

The name “White Potato Lake” originates from the Menominee word “Wapasipaniuk.” According to Smith (1930, p. 265), it translates to “White Potato Lake.” This information is also documented in the Wisconsin Archeologist, Vol. 33, No. 1 & 2, on pages 127 and 128, under Indian Place Names.  There are Indian burial mounts around the lake.  Please do not disturb them if you see them. Please note that all human burial sites, including cemeteries and Indian mounds, are protected under state law Section 157.70 Wisconsin Statutes.
